Grand Tracadie with Friends

 Wednesday 25 Sepetember

It was wonderful to catch up with Marie and Rick again, on our annual visit to our family on Prince Edward Isand.

On this cloudy day, the wind swept beach and cliffs at Grand Tracadie, almost made us feel we were on a different planet. Our cameras were clicking.

100 years ago, the scene was quite different. The Hotel Acadia was a very popular beach and wellness resort, "for those run down by overwork and nervous strain and requiring robust health and mental vigor". The Hotel was noted for its excellent Acadian cuisine, consisting of mackeral, codfish, haddock, lobster, clams, salmon and trout, along with local local meats, fruit and vegetables. The fishing wharf, which is now almost lost to the sandy shoreline, played a very important role in giving this hotel such a reputation.

Marie and I left the men solving the world's problems, and continued along the foreshore. I became very excited when I realised that what I thought was an aircraft in the far distance was actually a Bald Eagle landing on one of the sandy cliff tops. He was an acitive chap and I was delighted to discover, on downloading my images, that my small camera had actually caught him quite clearly.
Find him on the near cliff top.

Ominous clouds as we walked back to the car and a view of the 'modern resort style' accommodation of the Blackbush Resort.

A delicious picnic lunch followed, at nearby Bubbling Springs, before we continued on to Covehead Harbour Lighthouse and another beach walk.

The wildflowers in the dunes were spectacular.

The asters were magnificent.

An overcast, and cool day, but full of warmth from nature's beauty and the friendship of wonderful friends.

I would love to read your comment.

  2. What an amazingly calming place, just the sea, sky and sand. And pretty flowers! :)
I was hoping to find images of the previous hotel but I found only one old brochure and the information that "the Hotel Acadia was destroyed by fire on the night of 15 August 1906". Must have been a lovely place.
Thank you for an another very inspiring walk! <3

  3. Sara, it was a special destination to visit on this overcast day. I had great difficulty finding any information about the wharf ruins and only slightly more re the Hotel.

  5. These are incredible photos, Helen. Your camera does a great job but you are the person with the “eye” behind it! It was a lovely day. I look forward to another!

  8. Wow, your photos are beautiful. I can see why your cameras were clicking! That green algae on the rocks looks almost fluorescent!
