This is Spring?

After 21 air miles and 48 hours of time elapsing from home to our accommodation on Prince Edward Island, the temperature has dropped from 27C [autumn] to 12C [spring].

Just wonderful to be with our son and family again, with the added benefit of experiencing the onset of spring. Coming from the tropics it is incomprehensible that winter has such a strong grip. It is also incredible that just 2 weeks ago, ice was still floating down the Northumberland Strait and being thrust up onto the northern beaches.

Wet snow fell the week before our arrival but the locals now believe spring is well and truly on its way.

This set of pictures were taken on the 3.5 km envigorating walk in parkland opposite our sons unit.

On day 2 we went exploring the coastline to find ice still thawing on the beach. It was damp, windy cold and as expected, not very successful. Fantastic though to experience this weather.

Day 3 brought sunshine. Initially, just a tad cool but the sun's rays brought warmth by mid-afternoon.
A visit to Queen's Park and downtown Charlottetown saw us finding the first real clues to spring arriving.

I was excited to spot this bluejay.

Government House.

Late afternoon, we drove to the pretty harbour village of Victoria.

The lobster season gets underway on May 1st.

Just thrilled with this capture of Victoria, taken from a speeding vehicle, using my 30X zoom.

This morning, day 4 we are back to rain, but I am sure I'll still manage to keep my camera busy. It is going to be interesting to see the progress of spring over the fortnight that we are here.

I would love to read your comment.

  1. What a beautiful place! It must seem strange to see how long winter lasts. We had two days of 80 F and now it's supposed to snow!

    1. It is very strange to have a spring far colder than our winter's worst!

  2. We tend to have wet cool springs--- and then WHAM! 80's and out of control lawns. I love that lighthouse house. Super.

    1. Thanks Linda. It is wonderful that Ben is very outgoing, so the cuddles started from the moment we arrived and he has the most heart melting smile.

  5. Utterly fascinating!
Spring there looks like ours, only a little bit warmer. :) And the views are much more spectacular.
What an interesting guess you made in your comment, Helen! My final destination was indeed Kuopio, in Eastern Finland. In the photo, however, the plane is approaching Helsinki and you see the Baltic See. In summer, the lake near Kuopio looks similar, but at the moment it's still covered with ice.
You have visited Finland too? Of course you have. :) I hope you enjoyed your stay!
    Happy May! xx

  6. And a very happy May to you Sara. I was on a coach camping trip that followed the Norwegian coastline to Hammerfest then south through Finland. There was a vote as to staying in Kuopio or continueing on to a town where there would be night life. About 3 of us voted to stay, but thankfully [we were unaware] even if only one didn't want to continue, it was a no go. We weren't popular but so glad there was that clause! It is now lovely to be able to picture where you live.

  10. A lonely, beautiful and austere part of the world. Brought me a chilled feeling while the UK has a mini-heatwave!

    1. I've been constantly chilled but loving it in every way! The camera stopped working yesterday from so many pics and the cold! It was a triffle worrying until it got back to normal.
